LAKE ALGAE TREATMENT PROGRAM

Planktonic Algae floats in the water column. Small organisms and fish eat it and it’s what makes the water look green or blue-green. It also shades deeper areas of the lake and prevents most aquatic plants from growing there. Unfortunately, zebra mussels eat it too and they are very efficient at it, that’s why the water was so clear this year. This allows new types of plants to grow in deeper areas that they haven’t before and to float in and root in shallow areas of the lakes.

Filamentous Algae is what most folks call moss, grass or scum. It starts out as green fuzz on the bottom of the lake in water up to 6’ deep. It quickly spreads out and eventually grows to the top of the water where it impedes swimming, fishing and boat or jet ski use. As it grows up from the bottom, pieces of it also break loose and float to the top where the wind and currents push it into little balls that form dense mats as they accumulate in coves and channels. They then sink to the bottom to form layers of muck that smells like rotten eggs when disturbed.

Chara Algae is an erect form of algae that looks a lot like a vascular aquatic plant so many people confuse it for Eurasian watermilfoil or Southern naiad, two other nuisance plants we treat for on the lakes. It spreads rapidly and can grow to the surface in shallow areas in a very short time. It is also quite difficult to kill and grows back quickly when it has been. It also maintains its structure even after being treated. This means it still stands upright on the bottom and extends up near the surface where it can impede recreational activities.

Our once a month Algae Treatments are included in the Lakeweed Treatment Program at NO additional charge. For homeowners that have a severe problem with one or more of these, we are offering a new treatment program this year. Our techs will come will come once a month, between our regular lakeweed and algae treatments, and apply a granular algaecide. This means the algae will be treated every two weeks instead of once a month. This schedule really helps control the algae in the ponds we maintain and should do so in the lakes as well.

EFFECTIVE ON ALL TYPES OF ALGAE

Treatments work on all types of algae, including chara, present in Lakes LBJ and Inks and are included in our Lakeweed Treatment Program at no additional cost. For excessive algae growth, we have an add on program to treat a second time each month (for an additional fee).

PRODUCTS ARE ENVIRONMENTALLY SAFE

All products used are approved by the EPA, LCRA and TPWD. They are safe for swimming, pets, fishing and irrigation and do not harm wildlife.

TREATMENTS SCHEDULED FOR MAXIMUM EFFECT

Our program runs from March through October (eight treatments) to coincide with the most active plant growth and to control regrowth.

COST IS FOR ALL TREATMENTS COMBINED

The cost is based upon the linear footage of waterfront you have and is for all treatments combined. Product and permitting costs are also included.

LICENSED, INSURED AND EXPERIENCED
