LAKE WEED TREATMENT PROGRAM

Watermilfoil was originally established in Lake Austin in the 50’s to attract ducks and has been misnamed duckweed ever since. Growing up, we spent lots of time on there and our experience there with watermilfoil makes us believe that it will be a problem in Lakes LBJ and Inks from now on. Lowering the lake helps temporarily but this lakeweed will come back due to the uncountable number of seeds already in the lake bed and to the fact that any small fragment can establish a new plant. All of the boats that chop it up and folks that cut it and let it drift away are just helping to spread it.  In the past year several new types of fast growing lakeweeds (hydrilla, Southern naiad, slender leaf pondweed, and water stargrass) have also appeared in the lakes.

The only really effective way to control these lakeweeds is to treat them with approved herbicides so we offer a treatment plan that targets these unwanted forms of aquatic vegetation as well as chara and filamentous algae. This plan includes application by our licensed and insured crews of approved aquatic herbicides, along with an algaecide, that have no restrictions for swimming, fishing, pets or irrigation of established plants.

Our plan is to treat lake weeds and algae from March through October (8 treatments). We apply these products by injecting the solution into the lakeweed beds in deeper water and by spraying it over them in shallow water. We are diligent about treating in boat slips, under jet ski lifts, piers and docks and around ladders, ramps and water intakes. While monthly treatments will get the lakeweeds under control, algae is better controlled with bi-monthly treatments.  This can be done with a granular product that we apply during the first week of each month so that the algae is being treated every two weeks. Our pricing is based upon the linear feet of waterfrontage that you have and includes all product costs as well as any required permitting with the TPWD and the LCRA.
