NUTRIENT REDUCTION

Phosphorus from this inflow accumulates in lake sediments in large quantities following decades of nutrient pollution, only to be released when environmental conditions change. Lake ecosystems are able to buffer the effects of increased phosphorus inputs for a while but eventually the system becomes overloaded. When it does, aquatic vegetation growth explodes as it has the last few years in this area. Algae responds especially well to additional phosphorous in the lake.

Phoslock Treatment Before and After Results

Phoslock is a modified bentonite clay product that permanently binds excess phosphorus in the water column and sediment. Phoslock utilizes lanthanum, a naturally occurring earth element to react with releasable phosphates, primarily from the sediment, but also in the water column as it is being applied. Lanthanum naturally and permanently binds with available phosphates making the nutrient resource unavailable for plants and algae. It binds available phosphate to form a naturally occurring, non-toxic, inert mineral that settles onto the bottom sediment.

Once on the sediment, Phoslock remains as an inert component of the sediment. The nature of the bond between lanthanum and phosphate is such that it will not be broken under any naturally occurring pH range. Even more importantly, the bond will not be broken under anoxic conditions, which are prevalent in most lake sediments and the water column above it, or by water movement. Removal of phosphate by lanthanum is highly efficient, one ion of lanthanum will bind with one ion of phosphate. This process forms an insoluble, inert compound which strips phosphate from the water.

During a Phoslock application, the lanthanum medium is applied as a granular throughout the treatment area. As lanthanum binds with phosphates, it prevents algae utilizing it to grow. Phoslock will continue to bind with phosphorus until all available are taken. The overall result in this process is a significant reduction in phosphorus levels, restored water quality and the elimination of recurring algae blooms for an extended period of time. Phoslock is non-toxic to humans, animals, fish, and aquatic plants and is certified for use in drinking water reservoirs.
